Coco’s boater, cast in gilt: a woven straw hat seen from above, its brim pierced with the words CHANEL, PARIS and COCO. One of the wittiest brooches of Chanel’s Autumn 1994 collection, 70 mm across.

The Piece

Gabrielle Chanel began as a milliner, and the straw boater she wore in the 1910s became part of her legend. Chanel’s jewellery studio revisited it in 1994 with this openwork brooch, which renders the plait of the straw in metal and spells out the house in the brim.

It is large but light, and the pierced work lets the fabric beneath show through, so it sits well on tweed, linen or a plain black knit.
