Description

A striking vintage reversible sukajan dating approximately to the early 2000s, created in the spirit of rare postwar Japanese souvenir jackets.

The black velveteen side centers on a cracked skull entwined with two serpents beneath a finely embroidered spider web. Crossed bones complete the composition, while the word “Japan” appears above in sweeping silver script.

Matching dragon-like serpents extend along both sleeves amid curled clouds and winged details. Two smaller skulls decorate the chest, carrying the jacket’s dark imagery around the entire garment rather than confining it to the back.

Turn the jacket inside out and the atmosphere changes completely.

The reverse is constructed in diamond-quilted blue-black satin with contrasting ivory sleeves. Its back depicts Mount Fuji, a tiered pagoda, pine-covered rocks, an arched bridge, flowing water and a distant sailing boat. Smaller mountain-and-cloud compositions appear across the chest.

One side presents a shadowy world of skulls, serpents and webs. The other offers an idealized embroidered vision of Japan.
