An evocative Japanese Buddhist kakejiku hanging scroll depicting a solitary Rakan, or Arhat, attributed through its inscription to the Edo-period Kanō-school painter Kanō Sasshin, also known as Jōun.

The sacred figure is shown in quiet contemplation beneath a softly painted circular halo. His deeply expressive face, tightly curled hair, pronounced brows, beard, elongated ears, and flowing monastic robes give the portrait a powerful human presence.

Broad black ink lines define the folds of the robes, while restrained red-orange color accentuates the shawl draped around the shoulders. The subdued palette of aged beige, charcoal black, faded red, muted blue, and warm gold creates an atmosphere of disciplined stillness and weathered dignity.

The central painting is mounted in the traditional Japanese hanging-scroll format. A pale blue and gold brocade-style textile surrounds the artwork, complemented by narrow gold-toned borders and warmer textile panels above and below.

Painter’s Inscription

The vertical inscription at the lower right appears to read:

法橋 狩野 如運 察信 行年六十三歳筆

This may be translated as:

“Painted by Hōkyō Kanō Jōun Sasshin at the age of sixty-three.”

The inscription supports an attribution to Kanō Sasshin, art name Jōun, a painter associated with the Kanō tradition.

The attribution, exact date, seals, provenance, and relationship between the painting and the upper calligraphy have not been independently authenticated. The upper inscription and accompanying red seals may have been added by another calligrapher or owner.

• Pale blue and gold patterned textile mounting
• Strong Edo-period Kanō-school character
• Substantial age-related patina
• Suitable for Buddhist art, Japanese painting, and historical scroll collections

Artistic Character

The painting’s strength lies in the contrast between disciplined linework and the figure’s rugged individuality.

The face is rendered with closely observed detail, while the robes dissolve into broad, curling brush lines. The red shawl provides the composition’s principal color accent, drawing attention toward the head and upper body.

The faint halo separates the monk from the aged ground without overwhelming the image. Together, the restrained color, expressive contours, and weathered surface give the scroll a solemn, introspective presence.

This is not a polished modern reproduction aesthetic. Its visual appeal comes from age, imperfection, patina, and the accumulated atmosphere of an object that has survived generations.

Subject and Interpretation

Rakan are enlightened disciples of the Buddha commonly represented in East Asian Buddhist art as ascetic monks with distinctive personalities and foreign or exaggerated facial features.

This figure’s calm posture, downward gaze, halo, and enveloping robes suggest contemplation, spiritual discipline, and detachment from worldly distraction.

The precise identity of the Rakan has not been confirmed, and the piece should not be represented as a specific named Arhat or as Bodhidharma without additional scholarly documentation.

The central artwork appears to be executed in black ink and light color on an aged paper surface.

It is mounted with patterned textile borders, narrow gold-toned edging, hanging cords, and a lower scroll rod.

Although the visible brushwork and inscriptions suggest a hand-executed work, the exact materials, pigments, date, authorship, seals, mounting date, and restoration history have not been independently examined.

The listing does not guarantee:

• Unbroken provenance from the named artist
• That every inscription and seal is contemporaneous
• Genuine silk mounting
• Mineral pigments
• An untouched or unrestored surface
• Authentication by a museum, scholar, or recognized appraisal body

Condition

This is a significantly aged, pre-owned hanging scroll with extensive visible signs of time, storage, handling, and previous display.

Visible condition characteristics include:
