Antique Japanese Lacquer Tachi Sword Stand

This refined Japanese sword stand was created for the formal display of a tachi, the long sword traditionally worn edge-down by mounted samurai. Executed in deep lacquer and embellished with spiral shell-style maki-e, the surface unfolds as a landscape composition—layered terrain, foliage, and rhythmic forms rendered with confident decorative control.

The spiral shell technique creates a subtle play of light and texture, elevating the stand beyond functional hardware into the realm of pictorial lacquer art. Landscape imagery of this type reflects cultivated taste, referencing harmony between human presence and nature, a favored theme in late Edo to Meiji decorative objects.

Structurally, the stand presents an elegant vertical line: a tall upright terminating in a crossbar designed to support a mounted tachi securely, rising from a broad base that anchors the visual weight of the composition. Decorative coverage across both base and upright confirms that this piece was conceived as display furniture rather than storage.

Age-related wear is present and consistent with an antique lacquer object. These signs of time should be read as part of the stand’s historical life, enhancing rather than diminishing its character.

For collectors, this example occupies a high register of decorative arms furniture—equally compelling as a standalone lacquer artwork or as a dramatic stage for a mounted blade.
