The Nio, twin guardian kings of the Japanese temple gate, appear here as a matched bronze pair: Agyo and Ungyo, the open and closed mouths that together sound the beginning and end of all things. Each stands 32 cm high, a compact pairing for an entrance, altar or collection of protector imagery.
The Piece
A pair of bronze Nio, the muscular guardian kings who flank the gates of Japanese Buddhist temples. Agyo, with open mouth, and Ungyo, with mouth closed, are traditionally read as the first and last sounds of the Sanskrit alphabet, together embracing the whole of existence as they ward evil from sacred ground.
Each figure measures 32 × 22 × 11 cm, a scale suited to a cabinet, home altar or entrance display where the two guardians can stand facing one another as they would at a temple gate.
