An early Junya Watanabe Comme des Garçons reading of the military flight jacket, cropped and fitted for the women’s line, in sage nylon with the signature rescue-orange quilted interior.

The Piece

From the very beginning Junya Watanabe treated military and workwear archetypes as raw material, keeping their utility while re-cutting them for a slimmer, more considered body. This jacket belongs to that early vein of his women’s work, carrying product code JC-J023 and the older black-and-white Comme des Garçons label.

The shell is a smooth nylon in the khaki green of an MA-1, the lining and padding in vivid orange nylon. Instead of the boxy bomber shape it is cut short and close like a work jacket, with a pointed collar, a centre zip, two large bellows chest pockets and lower flap pockets. The back is the surprise: a belted lower panel with its own zipped pocket and side cinch tabs, so the jacket can be drawn in at the waist.

Snap cuffs and a short sleeve placket finish the sleeves. Made in Japan with polyester wadding, it gives light warmth for transitional weather and pairs well with a straight skirt or tailored trousers.

The season is not printed on the visible part of the label, so we describe it as archive, attributed to the early period of the line by its code and label style.
