Avión de transporte MATS de la Fuerza Aérea de EE. UU. de Yonezawa, juguete grande de hojalata litografiada accionado por baterías, década de 1960, tamaño de 50 cm

At around 50 centimeters, this Yonezawa plane belongs to the apex of Showa-era tin aircraft, where scale, mechanical ambition and postwar fascination with flight produced toys that bordered on functional models. Its subject, a MATS transport in olive green and star insignia, celebrates logistics and global reach rather than combat.

The Piece

Produced in the 1960s, this example depicts a U.S. Air Force Military Air Transport Service (MATS) aircraft, finished in deep olive green with high-contrast white lettering, star insignia and vivid red accents along the wings and tail. At approximately 50 centimeters in length it stands apart from standard tin aircraft; this is a display-dominant object rather than a shelf toy.

The plane is built from heavy-gauge lithographed tinplate, with panel lines, cockpit detailing and engine nacelles rendered in the bold, legible graphics typical of Yonezawa's upper-tier export production. Multiple propellers mounted beneath the wings add visual rhythm and mechanical intention, and the toy was designed as a battery-operated electric model, reflecting the period's enthusiasm for motorized realism over static representation.

Yonezawa aircraft at this scale were produced in far smaller numbers than their smaller friction or pull-toy counterparts. Large-format examples cost more to make, were harder to store and were more vulnerable to damage, especially at the fragile wing-mounted components, so they survive in significantly lower numbers and form a distinct upper tier of Japanese tin aviation collecting. MATS transports in particular symbolize logistics, reach and technological infrastructure, striking without relying on weaponry. The piece reads at once as toy, model and cultural artifact, shaped by postwar global aviation imagery and Japan's rapid mastery of export-grade mechanical manufacturing, and it can anchor an aviation-focused display.
