The Big X NK45 is a rare survivor from a brief chapter of Japanese toy history, when television heroes were no longer bound to humanoid form yet had not become towering robots. Produced by Yonezawa, this tin submarine joins naval realism to comic-book futurism, and it retains strong color and form.
The Piece
The submarine is the vehicle expression of early Japanese TV-anime hero culture, tied directly to Big X, one of the transitional franchises bridging human science-fiction heroes and the coming mecha-dominated era. Where humanoid robots stood for strength, Big X vehicles emphasized speed, stealth, Cold War futurism and naval and aerospace aesthetics. The NK45 sits historically between the playful fantasy boats of Astro Boy and the ultra-mechanized science vehicles of the late Showa period, in what may be called the hero-vehicle phase of 1963–1966.
Made by Yonezawa at the height of Showa optimism, it reflects postwar Japan's fascination with science, secrecy and technological mastery. The elongated hull, exaggerated conning tower and vivid lithography are a visual language designed to feel advanced, dangerous and heroic at once.
Unlike later mass-produced anime toys, NK45 submarines were not endlessly reissued, and their complexity, size and friction mechanism meant that few survived intact. They now occupy a particular niche as display artifacts of early anime industrial design rather than children's toys. This example suits a shelf, vitrine or themed exhibition, and speaks to collectors who already own Astro Boy or Godzilla vehicles, who are building a Showa anime vehicle timeline, who value form, scale and graphic presence, or who understand Yonezawa's role in early anime commercialization.
