Rather than tiger against eagle, this Tailor Toyo reversible stages a dialogue between Hawaii and Japan: a ukulele among hibiscus beneath “Aloha” on navy satin, and twin dragons coiling through clouds above Mount Fuji on silver-gray. Two complete textile panels, each a world of its own.
The Piece
A scarce reversible sukajan attributed to Tailor Toyo lot TT10495. The principal face is deep navy satin with warm champagne-beige sleeves; the reverse combines pale silver-gray satin with deep burgundy sleeves. One side is warm, melodic and tropical, evoking travel posters, ocean liners, resort culture and the mid-century dream of Hawaii; the other is cooler, atmospheric and ceremonial, a piece of wearable Japanese folklore. It avoids the predictable tiger-versus-eagle formula and feels less like a standard bomber than a portable two-panel textile exhibition.
Across the navy back, which shifts with the light from midnight to marine blue, indigo and blue-black, a large dark-blue ukulele runs diagonally, outlined in coral red and pale thread with defined strings, sound hole, bridge, neck, tuning head and decorative edging. Large hibiscus-like flowers in pale yellow, cream, champagne, ivory and coral with soft red outlines surround it, their directional stitching following each petal, while broad olive, sage, silver-gray and coral leaves, some pointed, some like palm or fern fronds, form a halo behind. “Aloha” sits above the arrangement and “Hawaii” near the lower edge, in stylized mid-century script in peach and coral. On the front, a surfer in warm yellow and peach with red shorts leans forward on a vivid red board over pale-blue waves, while the opposite chest carries two stylized butterflyfish in pale yellow, cream, silver-gray, blue and muted green, with long trailing dorsal extensions: human movement on the surface, marine life beneath. Narrow navy shoulder stripes and ribbing striped in navy, burgundy, cream and yellow complete the face.
Turned inside out, the jacket presents a reflective silver-gray body, reading from pearl gray to icy blue-gray, framed by burgundy sleeves with narrow pale-gray stripes. Two dragons in pale ivory, yellow, muted green, gray and coral twist through cloud formations in opposing directions, with horned heads, long whiskers, open jaws, clawed feet, segmented scales, flame-like crests and contrasting eyes and tongues. Mount Fuji, in turquoise blue, white and silver-gray, sits beneath the upper dragon as the still anchor of the composition, ringed by curling auspicious clouds in pale pink, lavender, coral red, cream, muted green and silver-white. On the front a smaller dragon emerges from layered pastel clouds on each chest, and arrow-shaped burgundy trim finishes the pockets.
In Hawaiian culture aloha expresses greeting, affection, compassion and connection, and in souvenir design it became the emblem of island hospitality; the ukulele evokes communal music, dance and performance, the hibiscus island warmth. The Japanese ryū, unlike the fire-breathing dragon of European fantasy, belongs to rivers, seas, storms and weather; set above Fuji, long associated with pilgrimage, poetry and printmaking, the dragons place the scene between the physical and celestial worlds. Hawaii and Japan share a long connection through migration, military routes, tourism, music, food and Pacific exchange, and the jacket turns that relationship into visual form.
Tailor Toyo's official archive notes that Hawaiian-themed souvenir jackets were comparatively uncommon, and that Japanese artisans sometimes developed Hawaiian embroidery from photographs and other references when producing garments for Pacific military markets. This jacket belongs to that borderland where Japanese embroidery, American military-tour clothing and Hawaiian popular imagery overlap.
