A guardian lion in full stride, one forepaw resting on an openwork jewel ball, its mane swept back and tail raised. Cast for the interior rather than the shrine, this dark-patinated Japanese metal okimono carries the protective imagery of the shishi into a domestic setting with considerable presence.
The Piece
The figure emphasizes movement, strength and symbolic guardianship rather than ritual function. Its exaggerated mane, raised tail and muscular stance reflect stylistic conventions commonly seen from the late Meiji through early Showa periods, when traditional protective imagery was adapted for domestic interiors and export-oriented decorative arts.
The pierced jewel ball beneath the forepaw represents wisdom, protection and the containment of chaotic forces. Shishi, the lion-dogs of Japanese tradition, have long stood as guardians at the thresholds of shrines and temples; here the motif becomes a decorative sculpture suited to collectors of Japanese decorative arts, traditional interiors or symbolic guardian imagery.
