Restraint outside, radiance within: this full-height butsudan, approximately 169 cm tall, conceals a gilt sanctum behind a dark lacquer shell. Its ordered interior, rising through tiers to a canopy above, gathers a temple's sense of hierarchy into a single domestic cabinet sized to command its own room or alcove.
The Piece
This traditional Japanese butsudan is domestic ritual architecture: an interior sanctuary designed to hold attention, order and continuity rather than a decorative cabinet. The interior presents a disciplined central axis, layered staging and an upper canopy zone that establishes a temple field within the home.
The dark exterior functions as an architectural shell. Opened, the interior becomes a concentrated gold sanctum, stabilizing focus and ritual rhythm through the classic contrast of outer restraint and inner radiance.
At approximately 169 cm in height, with a substantial depth of roughly 63.3 cm, the altar belongs to the upper domestic or small installation class, large enough to anchor a dedicated room or alcove in estates and diaspora households. A coherent shrine architecture at full height can turn a room into a sanctuary even when its surfaces carry the honest patina of lived ritual life; it is for stewards who value interior logic, stability and continuity over surface perfection.

Freight & Crating
Lacquer, gilded surfaces and metal fittings are impact-sensitive and door alignment is functional, so transport is treated as a conservation matter. Because of its height, mass and architectural fragility, the altar is designated for cargo-only logistics with professional crating. Handling estimates are net 95–140 kg and crated 170–260 kg, in a crate of approx. 190 × 110 × 110 cm; liftgate or pallet delivery and a placement crew are recommended. Total estimated US landed cost is approx. $7,300–$10,330 USD.
Owing to its packed weight and dimensions, the altar cannot travel by parcel services such as Japan Post EMS, DHL, FedEx or UPS. Custom crating, reinforced packing, coordination with domestic logistics providers and scheduling with international freight consolidators and export brokers mean delivery typically takes 6 to 10 weeks, depending on routing, carrier availability and customs clearance in the destination country.
Actual shipping costs may differ from automated calculator estimates, and a portion of the expected shipping cost may be reflected in the price; any difference is quoted separately once destination, delivery method and handling requirements are confirmed. Collectors are asked to request an exact shipping quotation for their destination before purchase.
- Primary HS code: 9403.60 (other wooden furniture)
- Alternates used by brokers: 9403.89; 4420.10
- Final HS selection is made with the customs broker at time of shipment
