A bronze temple mirror held in a hand-carved stand of waves and clouds. In Buddhist and syncretic ritual spaces the kagami stood for clarity, reflection and the presence of truth, a metaphysical instrument rather than an image for worship, and this Edo to early Meiji example keeps its original integrated construction.
The Piece
Unlike devotional statues, ritual mirrors served as instruments of meaning rather than images of veneration, signaling clarity, reflection and the symbolic presence of truth within Buddhist and syncretic ritual spaces.
The wooden stand is carved with wave and cloud motifs, visual metaphors for impermanence and transcendence, and the bronze mirror remains securely seated within it, as originally intended. Temple ritual furnishings are increasingly rare outside institutional contexts, and this one offers a direct material connection to historical religious architecture.
