In Tan Tan Bo Puking, a.k.a. Gero Tan, the figure does not sit within an environment; it produces one. Murakami turns an act both grotesque and comic into a metaphor for the endless output of images. This large-format silkscreen from the edition of 100 is new and unopened, with its certificate.
The Piece
A vivid, compositionally complex work from the Superflat canon, the print is anchored by the Tan Tan Bo figure, whose exaggerated form and open mouth serve as the origin point for a proliferation of surrounding imagery: fragmented character forms, mechanical and organic hybrids, floating visual symbols and layered color transitions. The outward flow makes the work a self-contained system in which character, environment and symbol interweave, and the viewer's eye is pulled, dispersed and reassembled across the surface.
The figure carries Murakami's recognizable vocabulary of rounded forms, saturated color fields and playful distortion, pushed beyond comfort. The act of puking is generative rather than merely shocking, standing for the continuous output of imagery, culture and meaning within Murakami's practice and, more broadly, for the endless generation and circulation of images in modern society. The blue ground provides structural balance, keeping the explosive central action legible as controlled chaos.
Built from multiple layered passes of ink, the silkscreen achieves sharp color separation, high saturation and precise edges, with pigment sitting on the paper in a subtle dimensionality that digital prints cannot match. Within Superflat theory, which collapses distinctions between high art and commercial imagery by drawing on anime, manga and traditional Japanese art, the work is a more aggressive exploration of that flattening, touching consumption and excess, repetition and saturation, and the boundary between internal and external worlds.
The edition of 100 places it in a bracket of controlled scarcity. Its scale and intensity suit gallery walls, curated interiors and institutional collections, and it rewards Murakami core collectors, print collectors and those drawn to Superflat-era statement works with a composition that reveals new relationships at each viewing.
