Takashi Murakami recasts Raijin, the Japanese god of thunder and storms, in his Superflat idiom on this R:Foil card from the Mononoke Kyoto series. Distributed only through a Kyoto furusato tax donation program and graded PSA 10 Gem Mint, it combines restricted distribution, a foil rarity tier and the highest condition grade.
The Piece
Raijin, traditionally the drummer-god of thunder, is flattened and stylized here into Murakami's Superflat vocabulary, made approachable while keeping his symbolic charge. The foil layer adds a second transformation: light becomes part of the composition, and the image shifts with angle, reflection and surroundings, echoing the unpredictability of thunder itself.
The card belongs to Murakami.Flowers / Mononoke Kyoto and was issued as a limited Kyoto furusato tax donation release (ふるさと納税限定), so its availability was restricted from the outset. The back carries Mononoke Kyoto branding with the rainbow flower emblem.
Its scarcity is layered: the distribution limited access, the foil tier reduces the number of copies that survive in perfect condition, and PSA grading narrows the field further. Encased in its slab, the card reads less as a game component than as a self-contained miniature work.
Murakami's move into trading cards extends his Superflat philosophy into a new collectible format, and this card sits at that frontier. It speaks to Murakami collectors seeking new-format works, collectors of low-population graded cards, and those drawn to Japanese mythological subjects.
