Takashi Murakami escultura de vinilo moldeado pintado Melting DOB con soporte metálico, 2021, edición de 300

Melting DOB turns Takashi Murakami's best-known character into a liquefied mass of eyes, teeth, ears and looping graphic forms, playful and grotesque at once. Made in 2021 in an edition of 300 and set on a metallic disk stand, it reads as a staged art object rather than a character figure; the sculpture itself is near unused.

The Piece

Mr. DOB is far more than a mascot. Across paintings, prints, installations and sculpture he has continually changed personality and form, moving between cartoon innocence, visual overload and something more unsettling. Melting DOB is one of the most dramatic sculptural expressions of that instability: the familiar round ears remain, while the rest of the character seems to collapse and reorganize itself into a molten form.

The sculpture has no single fixed front. One side is dominated by a large serrated mouth, multiple eyes and an aggressive expression; from another angle the mood changes completely. It is designed to be walked around and rotated, and its broad horizontal silhouette benefits from open display space rather than a place tight against a wall.

Red and cobalt blue sweep around the body beneath white rings and contours, interrupted by yellow, green, pink and black details. Murakami's vocabulary of exaggerated eyes, cartoon anatomy and tightly controlled color separation is unmistakable, and the painted cast vinyl gives a polished finish that catches reflections across the rounded form.

Murakami's Superflat practice collapses distinctions between museum art, advertising, character design and mass culture, and Melting DOB embodies that philosophy physically: part art object, part character figure, part visual hallucination. At first glance colorful and humorous, on longer looking its teeth, fractured anatomy and many eyes become considerably stranger, and that tension between attraction and unease is the work's strength.

The original 2021 release was distributed through Perrotin Hong Kong at an issue price of HKD 16,800, and release documentation records the work as made in Japan, a limited edition of 300 in painted cast vinyl with metallic disk stand.
