A Satsuma ware incense burner of the late Edo to early Meiji period, dense with gilt decoration and finely painted figural panels. Combining ritual function with decorative richness, it belongs to the export-era ceramics through which Japan entered the world's collections.
The Piece
This koro is a ceramic incense burner designed for ritual or contemplative use, produced in the Satsuma ware tradition. Satsuma ware achieved international acclaim for its dense surface ornament and technical refinement, and incense burners such as this were valued as both ceremonial objects and display pieces, bridging spiritual practice and artistic presentation.
The heavy gilding, figural narrative scenes and sculptural lion-dog elements suggest production during the Meiji export boom, when Satsuma ware was presented at world expositions and collected abroad. Export-period Satsuma koro with extensive figural decoration are sought for their visual density, craftsmanship and cross-cultural appeal, and the piece speaks to collectors of richly ornamented ceramics that reflect Japan's global artistic exchange in the Meiji period.
