A monumental kabuki actor in the manner of Tōshūsai Sharaku emerges from embroidered waves on the black quilted satin of this reversible sukajan, flanked at the chest by paired samurai helmets. Inside out, it becomes a textile bomber of flying cranes, pine, clouds and rust-colored suns.
The Piece
The principal black side is dominated by a large embroidered actor portrait in the yakusha-e tradition, with the sharp facial geometry and psychological intensity of Edo-period actor prints: a pale face with graphic black contours, narrow and heavily stylized eyes, a traditional swept-back hairstyle and an orange theatrical costume. He appears to grip a sword with a green-wrapped hilt and gold fittings as he emerges from white and gray waves scattered with droplets. An orange cartouche beside him reads 東洲斎, Tōshūsai, invoking Tōshūsai Sharaku, the enigmatic ukiyo-e artist who produced more than 140 actor prints in an exceptionally brief period beginning in 1794 before disappearing from the historical record.
Two richly colored kabuto helmets in green, gold, purple, red and ivory thread decorate the upper chest, with tall striped crests, layered neck guards, ornamental cords, gold armor plates, curving horn-like forms and fine floral and geometric details; placed symmetrically, they frame the jacket when it is closed. The black satin-finish body and sleeves carry diamond quilting, finished with black rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband and discreet hand pockets.
The reverse, a softly textured woven fabric, shifts to a serene landscape. Cranes in varied poses, some with wings extended and others descending, pale-bodied with muted green wings and soft pink feather details, fly through stylized pine branches and rounded cloudlike foliage on alternating black and silvery-gray grounds, punctuated by large rust-orange circles that read as rising suns. Cranes are traditionally associated with longevity, good fortune and fidelity, and pine with endurance; together they form an auspicious pairing found on kimono, wedding textiles and folding screens. This side presents a clean front without oversized embroidery, matching black ribbing and two front pockets.

Fit Guidance
Tag size M is approximately comparable to a Western S–M, depending on body proportions, preferred layering and desired fit. Measurements were taken flat using the house's standard jacket method, and minor variation may occur with garment positioning. Compare them with a similar jacket that fits comfortably, allowing extra room if the jacket will be worn over knitwear.
Authenticity & Care
The cartouche reads 東洲斎 (Tōshūsai); the portrait is Sharaku-inspired embroidery on a souvenir jacket, not a work by Sharaku. Every piece is examined and documented in Japan before dispatch and is offered with the Japonista authenticity guarantee.
