Fūjin with his wind sack and Raijin within his ring of drums move through spiraling cloud on smoky charcoal satin. Reversed, the jacket opens into luminous ivory jacquard with blush-pink sleeves, where Raijin returns alone, like the subject of an embroidered temple textile or a folding screen.
The Piece
This vintage sukajan presents Fūjin and Raijin, the legendary gods of wind and thunder, across two dramatically different reversible compositions: one face dark, atmospheric and turbulent, the other luminous ivory and pale blush jacquard that turns the same mythology into an almost ceremonial textile scene. Forceful Japanese streetwear on one side, refined embroidered artwear on the other, and not simply the same design repeated in another color.
On the charcoal-grey face both deities move through embroidered cloud formations. Fūjin appears in green with his flowing wind sack; Raijin is shown with his characteristic circular arrangement of drums. Spiraling wind, layered cloud scrolls and trailing cords fill the composition with movement, and the restrained palette of charcoal, antique ivory, muted green, burgundy and pale gold gives this side a weathered, almost ink-painting quality. Rather than decorative mascots, the gods appear suspended within the storm itself, surrounded by forces that seem to turn across the jacket.
The reverse pairs an ivory jacquard body with pale blush-pink sleeves as a soft ground for a central embroidered Raijin, surrounded by his drum frame, dark streaming ribbons and pale clouds, worked in white, taupe and charcoal with gold-brown drum details. Tonal woven landscape and botanical patterns move beneath the embroidery, appearing and disappearing as the fabric catches the light, a layered richness that printed graphics cannot achieve. On both faces, layered directional stitching defines hair, musculature, cloud forms, ribbons and supernatural movement, the raised threadwork standing out against the fluid satin ground.
Fūjin (風神) embodies wind and the invisible force carried across the landscape; his billowing sack is traditionally the vessel from which the winds are released. Raijin (雷神) commands thunder and lightning, his ring of drums one of the most recognizable silhouettes in Japanese mythological art. The two form one of the best-known paired deity traditions in Japanese art, and the embroidered clouds and circular currents that bind them suggest wind pressure, thunder, changing weather and the continual movement of natural forces: energy that cannot be contained.
The reversible construction, satin textile, pastel jacquard reverse and detailed wagara embroidery appear consistent with late twentieth-century to early 2000s Japanese sukajan production. The charcoal side pairs naturally with black denim, wide-leg trousers, leather boots, Japanese workwear and dark monochrome, punk or rock styling; the ivory-pink side with cream trousers, washed denim, pastel streetwear, minimal neutral layers, contemporary artwear and kimono-inspired dressing.

- The satin shows natural creasing, gentle surface variation and areas of tonal change; light age-related wear may be present along the sleeves, ribbing, seams and high-contact areas.
- The principal deity, cloud and drum embroidery remains visually strong in the photographs, with excellent color separation and overall impact.
- Offered with its vintage texture and patina preserved; the photographs form an important part of the condition record.
Sizing Guidance
Japanese vintage sizing frequently differs from modern international sizing; the raglan construction gives a naturally relaxed shoulder line, but chest width, body length and sleeve reach should decide the fit.
Preservation
Professional specialist cleaning is recommended. For display, a broad padded hanger supports the raglan shoulders and prevents stress to the satin and embroidered panels.
- Do not machine wash, tumble dry or bleach
- Avoid prolonged soaking
- Do not iron directly over embroidery
- Protect from extended direct sunlight
- Store on a padded hanger without crushing the embroidered panels
- Keep in a dry, ventilated environment
