The Piece

A Type A-2 by The Real McCoy’s, built as a Rough Wear Clothing Co. contract reproduction in the old Real McCoy’s period of the 1990s, before the brand’s restructuring. Its back carries hand-painted nose art by Kusano of Custom King, and its interior is lined in red silk, a rare variation. The composition, titled “The Holy Grail”, introduces a narrative layer rarely encountered in McCoy’s pieces, merging mid-century aviation iconography with postmodern artistic authorship.

The back panel presents a classic WWII-style nose-art composition: a reclining pin-up figure perched atop a stylized aircraft, less about wartime morale than about longing, escapism and idealization. The title script arcs above like a banner, and the phrase beneath, “Rosy Flesh and Seeded Womb”, gives the piece a surreal, almost poetic undertone beyond simple military homage. The work is signed C. King; it is authored, not anonymous.

The horsehide shows the hallmarks of McCoy’s golden era: density, depth and controlled sheen, neither over-corrected nor artificially aged.
