Sukajan reversible Onigashima Zero Fighter, rayón turquesa con mapa de Japón y acorazado, talla M

Air, land and sea meet in one embroidered poster: three Zero fighters streak through banded skies over a crimson map of Japan, with a dark battleship anchoring the scene on electric turquoise rayon. Turn the Onigashima reversible and it becomes a restrained pearl-ivory sports bomber.

The Piece

A vintage Onigashima (鬼ヶ島) reversible sukajan built around an unusually elaborate military-aviation composition. The turquoise face shows three stylized Zero fighters across bands of yellow, gold and crimson sky; behind them stretches a vivid red silhouette of the Japanese archipelago, and a dark navy and violet battleship anchors the lower back. Large angular lettering reading “Zero Fighters” arcs across the shoulders like the title of a wartime manga or a painted aviation poster. Japanese collector documentation identifies the design as an Onigashima Zero Fighter sukajan in rayon, tagged size M; comparable examples are increasingly uncommon, and Onigashima pieces now appear primarily on the secondary market rather than through regular retail.

The largest aircraft flies toward the viewer across the center, with two smaller planes above at different angles in a loose three-plane formation, each bearing the red disc markings of Japanese military aircraft in overlapping green, white, grey, black and metallic-toned thread. The imagery references the Zero carrier fighter, stylized rather than precise enough to assign a production variant: graphic aviation art, not engineering illustration. The crimson map runs behind fighters and ship alike, unifying sky and sea, and recalls the map embroidery with which historic sukajan recorded bases, ports, countries and tours. The naval vessel, with towering superstructure and elongated hull, stretches across the lower back in navy, purple and black, a smaller vessel nearby; it is stylized rather than a securely identified ship, the dark maritime foundation beneath the bright aircraft. The shoulder lettering, red with gold-toned outlines and spanning almost the entire upper back, recalls hand-painted manga titles, heavy-metal graphics and custom-motorcycle lettering.

On the chest, two matching circular emblems sit symmetrically, each with a deep crimson ground, a pale aircraft silhouette, “Zero Fighter” lettering, smaller decorative text and a white embroidered border, giving the front the look of a custom aviation-club bomber while the back remains the principal attraction. A rectangular embroidered patch on the upper sleeve, red-bordered with Japanese decorative imagery on a pale ground, adds a small wagara accent. The palette reads like a hand-painted movie poster: turquoise sky and body, pearl-white sleeves, crimson archipelago, yellow and gold atmospheric bands, deep green aircraft, red roundels, a navy and violet warship, silver-grey metallic highlights and pale blue and grey striped ribbing.

The pearl-ivory reverse is intentionally restrained: a clean back with turquoise raglan sleeves, narrow ivory and turquoise racing stripes over the shoulders and along the arms, arrow-shaped welt-pocket trim, fully finished exterior seams and striped collar, cuffs and waistband, a simple retro sportswear bomber. Worn partly unzipped, fragments of the aircraft embroidery show from inside. The rayon gives a fluid drape and a shifting surface, the turquoise moving between blue and green and the ivory between pearl white, pale silver and warm cream.

The sukajan began with embroidered souvenir jackets made for American servicemen in postwar Japan; this jacket belongs to the later revival, when the imagery crossed into motorcycle culture, tattoo fashion, rock styling and urban streetwear. Its rayon construction, bold typography, vivid color blocking, lightweight reversible architecture and densely illustrated embroidery point to a late-1990s to early-2000s Japanese revival piece, an attribution based on construction rather than a dated label. Displayed flat, the back resembles an embroidered aviation poster; worn, the reflective rayon makes planes, clouds and battleship change continuously with the light.

Condition

• Pre-owned vintage condition with visible age-related surface character; the Zero fighters, map, battleship, lettering and chest emblems remain bold, colorful and highly legible.
• Natural creasing throughout the rayon satin, uneven sheen from folds and previous wear, and general tonal variation across the turquoise face.
• Faint discoloration and marks on the ivory sections, more visible handling wear around sleeve and edge areas, and localized darkening near selected seams.
• Light abrasion around the zipper and pockets; minor loose or raised embroidery fibers; small irregularities within the principal back embroidery; natural puckering around densely stitched areas.
• Gentle wear to the rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband, with surface patina consistent with an older reversible satin jacket.
• No major open tear or large missing embroidered section is apparent in the photographs, which form an essential part of the condition record.

Attribution Record

The visible embroidery reads “Zero Fighters” and does not identify a particular special-attack unit. Although “kamikaze jacket” is sometimes used as a broad search phrase for this kind of apparel, no unit provenance is assigned. The responsible attribution is a vintage or vintage-era Onigashima reversible Zero Fighter sukajan, likely late twentieth century to early 2000s.

A closely comparable documented example measured approximately 53.5 cm across the chest, 63–64 cm in body length and 85.5 cm through the raglan sleeve, figures that support the relatively generous Japanese size-M proportions seen here; the measurements given in Details are specific to this jacket.

Sizing Guidance

Tagged M. The approximately 55 cm chest width and long raglan measurement suggest a relatively generous vintage Japanese M, roughly a relaxed Western S, a regular Western M or a slimmer fit on some Western L frames, while the body keeps the traditionally compact sukajan line, gathered waistband and rounded raglan shoulders. Compare every measurement with a similar jacket that already fits comfortably.

Styling Ideas

The turquoise face works with dark indigo denim, black wide-leg trousers, olive military pants, leather trousers, engineer boots, high-top sneakers and plain black T-shirts, and suits biker, rockabilly, tattoo-inspired, punk and visual-kei dressing. The ivory reverse styles more quietly with faded denim, cream workwear trousers, white sneakers, retro sportswear, minimal knitwear, pale military chinos and vintage varsity layers.
