Robot volador de hojalata Tetsujin 28-go de Nomura, accionado por baterías y con control remoto con cable, Japón de la década de 1960, candidato a restauración

A large-format Nomura Tetsujin 28-go built for spectacle: a battery-operated flying robot in vivid blue lithography, arms thrust forward, controlled through a wired remote. Its movement and back light worked until the lead broke, so it survives as a complete original system with a known, repairable fault.

The Piece

This Showa-era Tetsujin 28 by Nomura was designed for powered motion and suspended flight via a control lead, with articulated arms and a back light. Flying robots were Nomura's most ambitious engineering tier and were produced in far smaller numbers than walkers; the firm was known for early adoption of battery power over wind-up, for action formats beyond walking such as rolling, spinning and flying, and for bold lithography made to be read from a distance.

A broad chest and cylindrical torso convey mass and authority even in flight, while forward-thrust fists project into the viewer's space and amplify the illusion of force. The molded face anchors the character against the mechanical body, and a blue-dominant palette with contrasting bands and highlights keeps the figure legible in motion and under indoor light. Battery housing is integrated into the body, with a tethered controller: complex, fragile and therefore scarce today.

The robot stands at the meeting of first-generation robot mythology and first-generation consumer electromechanics, the moment when Japanese popular culture stopped being only drawn and broadcast and began to be manufactured as motion, light and physical command. Its posture belongs to a time before mecha design rules were standardized, carrying the blunt heroism of early postwar storytelling: technology as protector and tool, and as power that becomes morally complicated the moment it is controlled.

The lithographed surface shows honest patina, micro-scratches and handling marks, a survivor's surface that has not been cosmetically re-authored. Preserved in dark storage, the robot suits advanced collectors, institutional displays and specialist restorers seeking to return an original 1960s robotic system to motion and light.

Details

• Maker: Nomura, Japan
• Model: Tetsujin 28-go battery-operated flying robot with wired remote
• Character: Tetsujin 28-go (Gigantor), created by Mitsuteru Yokoyama
• Era: Showa period, 1960s
• Origin: Japan
• Material: Lithographed tin body; molded head and hands; metal internal chassis
• Color: Blue-dominant lithography with contrasting bands and highlights
• Mechanism: Battery operated, controlled through a wired remote lead; originally powered motion with suspended flight, articulated arms and back light

Tetsujin 28-go in Context

Created by Mitsuteru Yokoyama and known internationally as Gigantor, Tetsujin 28-go was the first giant-robot hero of Japanese popular culture, before Mazinger Z, before Gundam and before piloted mecha became the norm. A boy, Shotaro Kaneda, commands the colossal robot by remote control to stop criminals, but the machine was built as a secret weapon during the Second World War; the war ends, the weapon remains. The robot has no conscience and is pure force awaiting instruction, so the question is never whether Tetsujin is good, only who holds the controller.

Set beside its contemporaries the fault lines appear. Astro Boy chooses to be good; Tetsujin cannot choose at all, the first great split in Japanese science-fiction ethics between autonomy and obedience. Big X turns inherited guilt inward, while Tetsujin's damage spills into public space; Ultraman contains violence within ritual battles, while Tetsujin's is accidental and collateral. Its featureless, heavy, expressionless design is deliberate, an object rather than a character, and later works such as Mazinger Z and Gundam would bring cockpits, skill and tactics to the genre where Tetsujin offered none of that comfort.

Tetsujin 28-go linked robots to war memory, made control the central theme of mecha, and normalized moral anxiety in children's media. Its robots moved, lit up and responded to command, mirroring the narrative itself, which is why Nomura's tin Tetsujin robots are counted among the cornerstone pieces of Showa collecting, alongside early Astro Boy mechanicals, Nomura and Yonezawa space toys and other pre-Mazinger robot icons.

Authenticity & Care

Original Nomura wiring and remote retained, though non-functional; the Nomura attribution rests on identification of the model, and any maker marks are best examined in hand. Every piece is examined and documented in Japan before dispatch and is offered with the Japonista authenticity guarantee.
