Robot andante de hojalata plateada Nomura Tetsujin 28-go n.º 3 con caja, juguete Shōwa de finales de la década de 1950-principios de la década de 1960

A Nomura Tetsujin 28-go No.3 from the late 1950s to early 1960s, pressed in tin plate and left in its natural silver metallic tone with honest age patina. With no evidence of modern repaint and its structure intact, it is an unrestored survivor of the first great giant robot of Japanese popular culture, offered with a box.

The Piece

This Tetsujin 28-go No.3 was made by Nomura (Nomura Toy Co.), one of the core pillars of Japanese tin toy production, known for bold silhouettes, reliable wind-up or battery engineering and conservative, durable paint schemes. The body is pressed tin plate in a natural silver metallic finish: silver, not blue, not repainted, the original industrial tin tone carrying its age patina. Proportions, stance and mechanical layout are consistent with Nomura production, and the walking mechanism is present.

The silver body is a hallmark of early production rather than a downgrade. Early Nomura robots often used bare tin plate, with paint-heavy variants arriving later for mass appeal; silver indicates an earlier manufacturing window, lower repaint risk and higher confidence in originality, and collectors favor such examples because patina reads as honest age and wear is visible rather than hidden.

Created by Mitsuteru Yokoyama in 1956, Tetsujin 28-go is one of the foundational pillars of Japanese robot culture, earlier than Astro Boy, Mazinger Z and every super-robot trope. Unlike later autonomous robots he is remote-controlled by a human operator, embodying the era's ethical tension: technology is neutral, and responsibility lies with whoever commands it. The character established giant scale, urban destruction imagery, mechanical realism and an industrial design language, and seeded the operator–machine narratives of Mazinger, Gundam and Evangelion. Alongside Astro Boy's hope and Godzilla's fear, Tetsujin alone represents control, the question of whether humans deserve the power they create.

The accompanying box presents classic early Shōwa design language, with bold primary colors, a dynamic action pose and exaggerated proportions; its art may depict a colored robot while the toy itself was frequently silver, a distinction well understood among advanced collectors. Within the early Nomura series, No.3 is the iconic hero form, the version most people picture at the name, bridging weapon and hero as postwar fear softened into adventure and nostalgia. The piece sits at the intersection of manga history, early television culture, postwar industrial design and the peak of tin toy manufacturing.

Nomura Series Lineage

The early Nomura tin series captures Tetsujin before the genre split into super robot and real robot, when robots were still framed as remotely controlled weapons; No.1, No.2 and No.3 are best read as stages rather than revisions.

• No.1, the prototype icon: the earliest mass-market interpretation and closest to the manga conception, with the simplest geometry, a heavy rounded torso, minimal decoration and often darker or muted finishes; the rarest of the three.
• No.2, the industrial standard: the transitional, machine-forward form with cleaner symmetry, refined proportions, expanded chest-panel detail, an emphasized walking mechanism and silver or muted metallic finishes.
• No.3, the iconic hero form: the most widely recognized version, with a more expressive silhouette, brighter accents, bolder chest graphics and a slightly more animated posture, and strong shelf presence.
