A palace-scale butsudan conceived as ritual architecture in furniture form: 183 cm tall, 110 cm across and 82 cm deep, with a three-way opening door sequence that leads the eye into a deep gold sanctum. Black lacquer, matte pure-gold leaf and raised lacquer work set with mother-of-pearl give the cabinet the presence of a miniature temple annex.
The Piece
Built for presence at room scale, this cabinet uses layered doors and deep interior volume to create a controlled threshold into the inner sanctum. At approximately 183 cm tall, with a broad 110 cm frontage and a substantial 82 cm depth, it reads less as a cabinet than as a miniature temple annex for the home or estate.
The three-way opening is choreographed in stages: the outer doors establish room scale, secondary inner doors modulate light and reflection, and the sanctuary framing sets the focal axis. Above, the upper shrine provides a principal platform and canopy field for the central icon and attendant placements; below, the lower cabinet gives storage and ritual support for implements, linens, incense tools and continuity items. The 82 cm depth creates true visual recession, so the interior reads as a room rather than a shallow niche.
Construction follows traditional joinery logic, with hiba, hinoki and red pine referenced among the woods. The surface system is a modified urushi lacquer with select protective urethane areas, laid over robust ground layers built for hardness and stability. The gold surface work pairs matte-style pure-gold leaf with 24k gold foil and gold powder accents for layered depth, while hand-rendered raised lacquer work with mother-of-pearl (raden) detail produces a dimensional shimmer under changing light. Exterior fittings are brown-toned plated metal; the interior fittings are gold-toned, executed in a matte-gold style.
The cabinet is a centerpiece for diaspora households building a permanent devotional room, for estate interiors able to dedicate an alcove or annex, and for institutional settings where a monumental altar cabinet serves as a cultural anchor. Scale, depth and door choreography are what set it apart: it creates a ritual threshold and an architectural interior rather than simply storing objects. It suits those who want devotional continuity without improvisation, an altar that holds presence even when the room is quiet, minimal or modern, in a household that treats ritual space as architecture: intentional, stable and generational.

Freight & Crating
This monumental cabinet ships by freight in a crate only, with professional packing and controlled handling. The typical sequence runs from collection and linehaul within Japan to export crating, ocean LCL freight, US port handling and clearance, and inland delivery (curbside, threshold or white-glove by arrangement). Planning estimates are an item weight of 180–260 kg, a crated weight of 250–380 kg and an external crate of approx. 150×130×115 cm. Total estimated US landed cost, excluding the purchase figure, is approx. $11,867–$18,533 USD.
Owing to its packed weight and dimensions, the cabinet cannot travel by parcel services such as Japan Post EMS, DHL, FedEx or UPS; it ships by cargo or freight. Custom crating, reinforced packing, coordination with domestic logistics providers and scheduling with international freight consolidators and export brokers mean delivery typically takes 6 to 10 weeks, depending on routing, carrier availability and customs clearance in the destination country.
Actual shipping costs may differ from automated calculator estimates, and a portion of the expected shipping cost may be reflected in the price; any difference is quoted separately once destination, delivery method and handling requirements are confirmed. Collectors are asked to request an exact shipping quotation for their destination before purchase.
- Primary classification: HS 9403.60 (typical for wooden furniture and cabinets)
- Final HS determination may vary by broker interpretation and declared material breakdown
Authenticity & Care
The exact allocation of wood species, the details of the gilding layers and any later refurbishment require hands-on inspection; for institutional acquisition, close-ups of fittings, edge wear, door alignment and interior platform measurements should be requested before final commitment. Every piece is examined and documented in Japan before dispatch and is offered with the Japonista authenticity guarantee.
