Guanyin (Avalokiteshvara) monumental sentado sobre un loto, atribuido a jade de Hetian, escultura budista china, 72 cm

Guanyin, who hears the cries of the world, sits upon a lotus in this 72 cm figure, carved in the classical Chinese Buddhist idiom and attributed to Hetian jade. Its stillness and sheer mass are meant to anchor a sanctuary, study or archive, where contemplative authority matters more than ornament.

The Piece

In our educated assessment, this monumental sculpture depicts Guanyin (Avalokiteshvara), the bodhisattva of compassion, rendered in the classical Chinese Buddhist tradition and seated upon a lotus base. The lotus seat is a strong iconographic indicator associated with purity, awakening and spiritual elevation, and read alongside the serene expression, balanced posture and composed drapery rhythm, it supports this identification with a high degree of plausibility.

The scale and mass of the figure suggest it was conceived as a focal devotional presence rather than a decorative accent. Monumental Buddhist images establish atmosphere, anchor a room's emotional register and invite quiet attention; this piece reads as an object intended to radiate stillness.

The material is attributed as Hetian jade. At monumental scale such a claim is best treated through connoisseurship rather than assumption: if confirmed, the stone should present a specific density and tactile weight, characteristic translucency in thinner areas and consistent internal structure across carved transitions. Until direct verification is performed, the material attribution is provisional and presented transparently.

Lotus-seated Guanyin figures remain among the most culturally resonant sacred images in East Asia, and monumental examples, when properly verified and responsibly presented, transform space without theatrics. The piece suits collectors who prefer contemplative authority over ornament, whether for a private sanctuary, a study or a long-term archive of sacred art.

Authenticity & Care

Identification rests on the lotus-seated composition, devotional composure and monumental scale; clear base close-ups, any marks or inscriptions, documentation and density, translucency and toolwork study could confirm or refine it, and Hetian jade is treated as an attribution unless independently verified. Every piece is examined and documented in Japan before dispatch and is offered with the Japonista authenticity guarantee.
