Quemador de incienso koro con forma de kabuto del período Meiji, aleación de cobre rojo con relieve de máscara de oni y patas de shishi, 12.5 cm

A Meiji period incense burner cast in the form of a samurai kabuto, where martial symbolism meets the quiet discipline of incense. A fierce oni mask guards the front and shishi support the vessel, turning a symbol of warfare into an object for contemplation, tea rooms and the tokonoma.

The Piece

The vessel takes the silhouette of a helmet worn by high-ranking warriors, its frontal relief depicting a fierce oni mask, a traditional guardian image associated with warding off malevolent forces. It is cast in a red copper alloy and finished by hand, with applied relief detailing, engraved ornament and assembled structural elements, an integrated lid with ventilation apertures, and sculptural feet that support the body in balanced proportion for functional incense burning.

During the Meiji era (1868–1912), Japan's metal artisans reinterpreted samurai imagery for the domestic art market and an emerging international collector audience, abstracting the kabuto into vessels and censers that preserved warrior identity in a post-feudal society. The helmet form speaks of readiness, clarity of mind and disciplined presence. Workshops transitioning from feudal commissions to civilian art production brought export-quality finishing to such pieces.

Shishi, the mythical lion-dogs that guard temple gates and sacred thresholds, are integrated into the base, aligning the object with protection against misfortune, fire and spiritual impurity, which made the form especially fitting for incense. Their stylized expressions and muscular treatment reflect late Edo to early Meiji sculptural conventions. Subtle color variation across the surface suggests intentional alloy control rather than accidental patination.

Unlike a martial kabuto, this is functional art, intended for cultured interiors, tea rooms or a scholar's alcove, where incense was burned for fragrance and as a spiritual and atmospheric practice. It suits collectors of Japanese incense implements and Meiji metalwork, specialists in kabuto iconography, and tokonoma or architectural display.
