From the Spring-Summer 2023 collaboration, Louis Vuitton's Multipocket Backpack M21714 scatters Yayoi Kusama's faces, flowers, suns, fish and dreamlike characters across luminous blue Taurillon Monogram leather. This unused example, made in France and supplied with dust bag and name tag, reads less like decoration than a moving gallery wall.

The Piece

Louis Vuitton's second major collaboration with Kusama turned familiar Maison silhouettes into portable surfaces for her obsessive, exuberant and deeply personal visual language, translated across leather goods, ready-to-wear, footwear, accessories and objects. Rather than printing a repeating motif, this backpack scatters colorful appliqués over the body, drawing on the figurative language of Kusama's later work, where eyes, faces, botanical forms, symbols and eccentric creatures populate surfaces almost without hierarchy. Every angle reveals another small composition.

The foundation is richly grained blue Taurillon leather with the Monogram embossed directly into it, a quieter branded texture beneath the brighter appliqué work. From a distance the backpack reads as a vivid blue sculptural object; at closer range the Monogram emerges beneath the artwork. The blue acts almost like a painted sky, against which red, orange, yellow, green, blue, white, pink and black motifs vary dramatically in shape and scale, the warmer appliqués jumping forward while the cool ground keeps the composition unified.

A tall central compartment paired with two substantial front pockets creates a recognizable three-volume façade, and those pockets frame miniature compositions within the whole: one carries a radiant face-like sun, the other an elongated anthropomorphic figure, while further flowers, faces, circular forms and a vivid red fish-like character appear across the upper body. No single motif dominates, so the eye moves continuously and the piece rewards close inspection.

The pebbled Taurillon gives more tactile depth than coated canvas while holding the architectural form. The configuration includes a double-zip main compartment, three zipped pockets, two open pockets, the two front compartments, a top carry handle, adjustable backpack straps and a luggage tag, with room for documents, electronics and travel. Louis Vuitton's travel heritage remains legible beneath the artwork: the construction is disciplined, the surface an artist's field, and neither overwhelms the other.

Controlled clothing serves it best. Black tailoring or denim, white shirting, grey knitwear, cream outerwear, navy wool or neutral Japanese workwear lets the backpack remain the visual center.
