Few handbags are identifiable at once by the fashion house, the contemporary artist and one of history's most famous paintings. From the 2017 Masters Collection, this Speedy 30 M43372 wraps Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa in metallic Da Vinci lettering and coral-pink leather, preserved near-unused with its dust bag and collaboration charm.

The Piece

Louis Vuitton introduced the Masters Collection with American artist Jeff Koons in 2017, transferring celebrated works of art onto the house's most recognizable silhouettes. The Mona Lisa became one of the defining images of the collection, overlaid with the artist's surname in large metallic letters, Monogram symbols and brightly colored leather. M43372 is the Mona Lisa Speedy 30 from this limited-edition collaboration.

The portrait occupies the broad front and rear, its muted greens, browns and flesh tones flowing across the curved Speedy so that the painting changes with the viewing angle and is carried and seen in motion rather than as a flat image. Across it runs the enormous dimensional inscription Da Vinci, behaving not as a discreet logo but as a sculptural element, while reflective metallic Monogram flowers and LV initials form another layer between the painting and the bag.

Coral-pink leather frames the artwork across the top handles, handle mounts, piping, side panels, zipper pulls and further detailing, its saturated tone bringing warmth to the subdued Renaissance palette; metallic silver to gunmetal hardware bridges the classical image beneath and the contemporary treatment above. The zip-top opens broadly onto a richly colored lining with two open pockets and a generous central space. The included collaboration charm is an important part of the Masters presentation.

Three creative languages share the object: da Vinci's portrait, Koons's appropriation and monumental typography, and Louis Vuitton's Speedy architecture and Monogram iconography, none disappearing into the others. Using so established a form heightens the contrast between familiar object and extraordinary surface. The Speedy works best as the statement piece against black tailoring, white shirts, cream knitwear, olive, khaki, dark denim, minimal dresses, neutral coats or monochrome outfits.
