The Piece

The shape tells its own story. Reinforced blue leather corners, vertical leather bands, metal studs and visible hardware reference the house's historic trunks, while the slim rectangular proportions let the piece act as a crossbody, shoulder bag, clutch, travel organizer or large-format wallet. Abloh repeatedly revisited trunk construction through smaller contemporary bags, and here almost every familiar element of Louis Vuitton heritage has been rearranged.

The Fall/Winter 2020 Clouds collection placed an expansive blue-sky motif across men's bags and accessories, and has since become one of the most recognizable signatures of Abloh's tenure. Powder-blue Monogram on deep royal-blue canvas is cut by white cloud formations and large-scale LV elements; the clouds are not distributed uniformly but interrupt the orderly initials and flowers in irregular masses, so each section has its own composition. That tension between strict heritage pattern and free atmospheric artwork gives the series its character.

Silver-tone hardware on the corners, studs, zip, strap fittings and fasteners suits the cool palette of royal blue, sky blue, powder blue and white, and separates the piece from Louis Vuitton's traditional gold-tone designs. Inside, a double-zip opening reveals 6 card slots, 1 zippered pocket and further flat compartments for cards, currency, small documents, a slim smartphone and other essentials; without its removable adjustable strap, the piece becomes a streamlined clutch or oversized wallet.
