Some Louis Vuitton pieces are recognizable by their shape; others from across the room. This 2009 Zippy Wallet, model M93712, sets Stephen Sprouse's oversized fluorescent Vert lettering across classic brown Monogram and opens to an equally vivid green interior, offered in unused display condition with its Louis Vuitton box.
The Piece
Louis Vuitton's collaboration with the American artist and fashion designer Stephen Sprouse holds a particularly important place in the house's modern design history. Sprouse was known for combining high fashion with the visual vocabulary of downtown New York, particularly graffiti, punk graphics and saturated color. Louis Vuitton first brought his handwritten graffiti treatment to Monogram at the beginning of the 2000s; the concept returned in 2009 under Marc Jacobs in a collection paying tribute to Sprouse, with vivid fluorescent graffiti and rose imagery across bags and accessories. The effect was intentionally irreverent, the meticulously repeated Monogram becoming a canvas for spontaneous-looking lettering, and the collection remains an especially recognizable example of the house's early crossover between luxury fashion, contemporary art and street-influenced graphics.
Created as part of that project, this limited-edition wallet sets Sprouse's oversized handwritten Louis Vuitton script in fluorescent Vert green over the familiar LV initials and floral motifs. Rather than hiding the house identity, Sprouse exaggerated it. The lettering deliberately overlaps the Monogram instead of following its geometry, holding the orderly language of Louis Vuitton beneath something energetic, imperfect and apparently spontaneous. Because the graffiti continues across the exterior panels, every viewing angle produces a slightly different composition, and the almost electric green against deep brown, the Day-Glo color used to radically alter classic Monogram pieces, is particularly characteristic of the 2009 collection.
The three-quarter wraparound zipper opens widely to a bright Vert green cross-grain leather interior that continues the fluorescent theme rather than retreating to a neutral lining, giving the wallet a cohesive appearance when opened. The full-size continental layout comprises eight card slots, three gusseted compartments, one zippered coin compartment and three additional flat pockets, so cards, currency and smaller contents are easy to organize. Period references for M93712 likewise document eight card slots, a zippered pocket and multiple open compartments, and comparable archival references identify the model specifically as the Monogram Graffiti Zippy Wallet Vert.
Its proportions and graphic impact allow the wallet to function almost as a miniature fashion object, carried inside a bag or used as a statement continental wallet with the Graffiti pattern as focal point. The green works particularly well against black, charcoal, olive, denim and neutral tailoring, while the Monogram keeps it tied to Louis Vuitton heritage, and the design suits men's, women's or gender-neutral styling alike.
