An exceptionally unusual Cotteville 35, reference M20334, in which black openwork mesh is laid over the Monogram and lit from beneath by flashes of red. Black leather framing, silver-tone rivets and a vivid red interior turn the house's most disciplined trunk form into something almost industrial.

The Piece

The Cotteville is one of the purest expressions of Louis Vuitton's trunk-making heritage, and the house continues to produce the family as part of its hardsided trunk collection: a compact hard trunk carrying forward traditional luggage-making techniques through rigid construction, reinforced trim, corner hardware, locking systems and fitted interiors. The Monogram Cotteville 40 remains part of the current official trunk offering. M20334 applies that historic form to a far more unconventional black-and-red composition.

Its defining feature is the layered exterior. A black geometric mesh sits across the Monogram surface, partially obscuring and partially revealing the LV initials and floral motifs beneath. From a distance the trunk reads as predominantly black; closer inspection reveals the Monogram through the lattice, while red from the underlying structure glows through portions of the mesh and gives the surface an architectural depth that shifts with the viewing angle.

The trunk keeps the traditional Cotteville characteristics: a rigid rectangular structure, reinforced black leather perimeter, metal corner protection, perimeter rivets, a substantial black leather top handle for carrying by hand, locking hardware, a hinged opening and fitted interior construction. Silver-tone metal appears throughout, at the rivets, corner fittings, lock, handle attachments, hinges and interior fittings, its cool finish sharpening the contrast between the black structure and the red interior. This is a genuine hardsided object, quite different from a soft travel bag or briefcase.

Opening it changes the visual temperature completely: the dark architectural exterior gives way to a richly colored red interior, one of the most compelling parts of the design. The palette of black, deep red, dark Monogram and silver tone is far more contemporary and dramatic than a traditional brown Monogram Cotteville. Its fascination lies in contradiction: old-world architecture, technical mesh, theatrical red, a severe black frame and a Monogram visible but partly hidden, so the viewer looks through the exterior rather than simply at it.
