Closed, it is austere: a tall field of dark Monogram framed by leather and brass. Then the doors open and a stacked sequence of tray and drawers appears, a piece made not merely to hold a wardrobe but to become one, its repaired fittings and altered lining only making that history more legible.
The Piece
This Louis Vuitton Monogram wardrobe trunk from circa the 1930s carries identifying number 160990 and stands about 115 cm high, built on a scale closer to cabinetry than luggage. Its tall rectangular body presents a disciplined Monogram facade; opened, it reveals an upper two-level tray followed by a vertical sequence of drawers, the functionality of a compact chest of drawers carried inside a travel trunk.
The exterior combines Monogram-coated canvas with substantial leather borders and reinforcement, metal corner fittings, riveted hardware, multiple latches, central locking hardware and side carrying elements. Inside, wooden structural panels, textile lining and fitted wooden drawer construction show how historic trunks were conceived around complete wardrobes rather than individual objects. The tall, relatively narrow format commands a room without consuming floor space, and displayed closed it reads almost as an architectural column.
The interior has a documented restoration history. The original lining was predominantly yellow-toned; sections at the uppermost and lower levels have been replaced with white-toned material, and the drawer pulls were repaired or replaced by an Italian furniture craftsman, so they are not original Louis Vuitton components. Some lifting or separation of the interior material is present.
