Between protection and authority stands the shishi, and at approximately 47 cm this Kutani example takes up that role at architectural scale. Bold modeling and dense enamel give the guardian its force, the kind of monumental figurative expression in which Kutani ware has long excelled.
The Piece
Within the visual and spiritual language of Japan, the shishi occupies a liminal space between protection and authority. This Kutani example conveys guardian power through bold modeling and dense enamel, a reminder of how well the ware lends itself to monumental figurative expression.
At 47 cm the figure functions as an architectural presence rather than a cabinet ornament. Large Kutani shishi have become increasingly scarce and are keenly sought by collectors of Japanese ceramic sculpture.
