A black-and-white carp climbs against a vertical waterfall across nearly the entire back of this black satin sukajan, framed by emerald pine, weathered rock and bamboo. Composed with the rhythm of a hanging scroll and the force of a tattoo backpiece, it makes the Dragon Gate legend wearable.
The Piece
The jacket pairs a deep black satin body with aged ivory and champagne raglan sleeves and black-and-ivory striped ribbing. Its embroidered composition travels from the upper shoulder over almost the whole back, with an expansive, mural-like scale: the carp in active ascent, head turned up toward the falling water, its layered scales, fins and whiskers worked in ivory, silver, gray and black; the cascade in long vertical lines of ivory, silver and pale blue above cresting waves and curling foam; ancient pine in emerald and forest green; cliffs and stones in beige, taupe, brown and gray; and green bamboo foliage near the lower fall, all set against open black space.
According to the Dragon Gate legend, a carp that overcomes the rapids becomes a dragon, and the ascending carp became an emblem of courage, perseverance and success earned through endurance. Here the waterfall is the obstacle that gives the koi its meaning. Around it gather pine (matsu 松) for longevity and constancy, flowing water (ryūsui 流水) for movement, rock (iwa 岩) for struggle and ascent, and bamboo (take 竹) for flexible strength: a complete landscape of endurance.
The koi's scales are articulated in repeating stitch patterns, and the pine needles in dense, dimensional embroidery that stands softly raised from the satin, which shifts from inky black to deep charcoal across the folds. The jacket follows the traditional Yokosuka silhouette: a rayon or rayon-like satin shell, contrasting raglan sleeves, rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband, front zipper and lightweight lined construction. Construction, embroidery density, palette and large-scale wagara composition are consistent with late 20th-century to early 2000s Japanese sukajan production; the maker is unattributed and the jacket undated.
