Genbu, the serpent-entwined Black Tortoise Guardian of the North, wraps across chest and back of this GUMU reversible sukajan, rising above a burning red lotus on black satin. Turned inside out, the jacket becomes a restrained burgundy quilted bomber, one face mythological and heavily embroidered, the other quiet and quietly luxurious.
The Piece
This GUMU / 具夢 reversible sukajan is centered on Genbu / 玄武, known in Chinese as Xuanwu, one of the Four Directional Guardians of East Asian cosmology: Seiryū, the Azure Dragon of the East; Suzaku, the Vermilion Bird of the South; Byakko, the White Tiger of the West; and Genbu, the Black Tortoise-Snake of the North. Genbu is traditionally depicted as a tortoise entwined with a serpent and is associated with the north and the winter season. The creature should not be catalogued as a dragon, turtle or pair of snakes; exact-design Japanese references consistently identify the motif as Genbu. Japanese secondary-market records identify this embroidery as the GUMU Genbu reversible sukajan with light internal padding and a quilted reverse.
The principal face pairs a black satin body with pale champagne-pink sleeves whose cool metallic sheen acts like moonlight around the dark ground. The design expands the traditional creature into two mirrored, dragon-like guardians, each combining dark green serpent scales, a brown segmented tortoise shell, white underbelly and claws, yellow eyes, a red forked tongue, a coiling reptilian body and stylized cloud or flame ornament. Rendered in forest green, charcoal, ivory, bronze and flashes of yellow, they appear to confront, circle and protect one another at once, a compact defensive composition rather than an open battle. The tortoise brings endurance, stability and longevity, its shell suggesting armor, shelter and resilience; the serpent brings movement, renewal and transformation. Together they form a guardian whose power is patient, watchful and difficult to dislodge.
Beneath the figures rises a lotus in vermilion red, burnt orange and yellow with deep green leaves and a curling stem, the strongest warm color in the composition. In Buddhist and broader Asian traditions the lotus speaks of spiritual emergence and purity, rising cleanly from muddy water; here it also anchors the lower embroidery while the serpent bodies coil above. Beside the creature a yellow-and-green spiral ornament reads as stylized flame, cloud or supernatural aura, the kind of motif used around dragons, Buddhist guardians and mythological animals, depicting energy itself rather than realistic fire.
On the front the Genbu design runs almost continuously across both sides of the zipper rather than as small chest patches. One serpent head reaches inward from each side while the bodies curve up and out across the torso: fully zipped, a single protective emblem; partly open, the creatures separate and the burgundy reverse shows beneath; fully open, the embroidery becomes fragmented and tattoo-like. Arrow-shaped welt pockets cut vertically through the lower composition. The back carries a larger, more spacious version: one serpent rises through a circular coil at the top, eye and tongue directed toward the second creature, the armored bodies overlap below in a dense arrangement of shells, claws and scales, the lotus grows from the lower left and the gold-green ornament rises opposite. There is no lettering, place name or military inscription, and the broad black ground lets the image breathe.
The reverse is deep burgundy satin stitched in a diamond-quilt grid, with pale pink sleeves, burgundy inserts running from the collar over the shoulders and down the outer arms, vertical welt pockets and burgundy, cream and dark striped ribbing; only passing glimpses of the Genbu embroidery appear when it is worn open. The embroidery itself uses several stitch directions: short overlapping stitches for scales, longer stitches for underbellies and claws, irregular polygonal plates for the shells, smoother satin-like stitching that gives the lotus a brighter reflective finish, and black outlines that keep each form distinct. The Genbu subject is considerably less common than the dragons, tigers, eagles and koi found throughout the sukajan field, and the pink, burgundy and black palette stays formidable without the familiar black-and-gold or navy-and-silver formula.

- Light storage creases within the burgundy quilting, gentle wear and softening at the rib-knit edges, minor raised or loose embroidery fibers and light handling wear around the zipper and pockets.

Fit Guidance
The silhouette has the familiar proportions of a padded sukajan: raglan shoulders, a rounded upper body, moderately compact length, full sleeves, a gathered waistband and light bomber volume. The padding gives more structure than an unlined summer sukajan while staying lighter than a winter bomber. Sizes 壱 and 弐 correspond broadly to medium and medium-large or large depending on the garment; rely on the measurements of this piece rather than the reference figures.
Styling Notes
The Genbu face works with black denim, wide charcoal trousers, leather pants, dark cargo trousers, engineer boots, high-top sneakers and plain black layers, and suits Japanese biker, tattoo-inspired, visual-kei, wagara and Y2K archive dressing. The burgundy reverse pairs with faded blue denim, cream trousers, burgundy knitwear, white T-shirts, retro sneakers, vintage sportswear and rockabilly styling. Hung flat, the jacket reads as an embroidered mythological panel.
Authenticity & Care
Exact-design Japanese secondary-market records identify this embroidery as the GUMU Genbu reversible sukajan with padding and a quilted reverse; a GUMU collector account of a comparable jacket bought about twenty years earlier supports the early-2000s context but does not date this example. Every piece is examined and documented in Japan before dispatch and is offered with the Japonista authenticity guarantee.
