A thunderous piece of wearable art from Kachō Fūgetsu, built around an embroidered mythic battle that nearly consumes the whole back panel. Its theatrical scale recalls Aomori Nebuta festival art, and the result is less a quiet souvenir jacket than a portable festival float, stitched in thread and fire.
The Piece
Kachō Fūgetsu is a Japanese wagara label recognized for highly pictorial embroidery, dramatic folklore subjects and boldly composed souvenir jackets. Here deep crimson satin is the stage for a wild-haired, oni-like warrior emerging through rolling clouds, rendered with oversized hands, contorted features and tremendous physical movement. The theatrical scale and muscular exaggeration appear strongly influenced by Aomori Nebuta festival art, in which legendary warriors, demons and supernatural confrontations are transformed into monumental illuminated figures.
The shaggy-haired figure lunges forward through masses of curling clouds, his face animated by an exaggerated grimace and his red robes sweeping across the lower composition; a second pale, muscular figure appears behind him, so the struggle seems caught at its most explosive moment. The embroidery is unusually ambitious in scale, running from the neckline almost to the waistband in dense areas of rust red, dusty pink, cream, pale blue, forest green, brown, black and muted gold. Thick outlined clouds frame the figures and soften the transition between the vast central embroidery and the lustrous satin ground. Rather than reading as a conventional dragon or tiger sukajan, the jacket carries the atmosphere of festival painting, heroic folklore and theatrical battle imagery.
Rows of ivory skulls descend both black satin sleeves with crimson flame motifs. Each skull is individually shaped and angled, producing a rhythmic tattoo-flash effect rather than a repeated factory emblem, and the bone-colored thread on black satin gives the sleeves punk, biker and visual-kei energy. Near the lower front stands a compact embroidered samurai in richly detailed red armor, with layered plates, cords, weapons and traditional helmet elements, a human warrior presence beneath the supernatural imagery. Cream and gray clouds sweep across the opposite chest, connecting the restrained front to the storm across the back.
The interior reveals a contrasting blue patterned textile face, so the fully reversible jacket offers two moods: one fierce and theatrical, the other quieter and textile-led. The primary face combines deep crimson satin, black sleeves, burgundy-and-black striped ribbing, ivory bone tones, muted antique-gold clouds, pale blue accents and green collar ornamentation. It can also be displayed as textile art within collections devoted to sukajan, Nebuta aesthetics, Japanese folklore, oni and yōkai imagery or embroidered street fashion.

Condition
- Pre-loved vintage condition with natural evidence of age and previous wear; the embroidery remains visually powerful.
- The satin displays expected surface creasing, gentle tonal variation and handling character.
- Strong color separation and substantial thread coverage remain across the central artwork, sleeves and chest.
- Minor imperfections are part of the jacket's vintage identity; the photographs form an important part of the condition description, and further close-ups are available.
Symbolism
- Oni and supernatural warriors embody untamed force, danger and the chaotic energies beyond human control; in festival and popular art they become trials to be overcome, spiritual power and the tension between order and disorder.
- Scrolling clouds lift the confrontation beyond the everyday world, suggesting a celestial realm and the rolling movement of Japanese painting, tattoo design and festival imagery.
- Skulls and flames bring themes of mortality, defiance and impermanence, and place the jacket in Japanese punk, biker and tattoo-inspired streetwear.
- The armored samurai represents discipline, courage and composure, a counterpoint to the uncontrolled energy across the back.
Styling Notes
Pairs naturally with black denim, leather trousers, wide-leg Japanese workwear, combat boots or a simple monochrome base that lets the embroidery command the silhouette.
