Three grinning skulls beneath a gothic emblem and sweeping angel wings, embroidered bone-white on black satin and repeated in shadowy black on smoky taupe. A Back Street Crawler reversible rooted in Japanese punk, rockabilly and biker culture: one side shouts, the other broods.
The Piece
A darkly theatrical reversible sukajan by Back Street Crawler, carrying winged skulls, gothic crosswork and embroidered “Junk Clothing” lettering across two dramatically different colorways. The primary face is midnight-black satin with bone-white embroidery: three skulls emerge beneath a central gothic emblem, surrounded by sweeping angel wings and mirrored ornamental forms, and matching skull-and-wing artwork runs along both sleeves, so the composition wraps the whole garment rather than sitting as a single back graphic.
On the back, the central skull faces forward while two smaller skulls turn outward; large wings frame them and pointed gothic elements form a cross-like silhouette above and below. The embroidered lettering reads “Junk Clothing Back Street Crawler.” Smaller mirrored skull-and-wing motifs decorate the chest, and elongated winged skulls travel down both sleeves.
Turned inside out, the same imagery reappears in black thread on a smoky taupe-brown body with pale khaki sleeves, the skulls, wings and lettering surfacing almost like shadows through the fabric. This side keeps the full sleeve artwork, dual chest motifs and large back composition while offering a quieter, more monochromatic look.
The repeated skulls evoke mortality, rebellion and a refusal to soften one's identity, treated closer to tattoo flash, punk graphics and vintage biker art than to the animal motifs of conventional sukajan. The wings add movement and scale and set heavenly imagery against macabre subject matter, while the pointed central ornament and mirrored flourishes recall gothic crosses, blades and heraldic emblems. Set apart from tiger, dragon and koi designs, the jacket speaks to collectors of Back Street Crawler, Y2K Japanese streetwear, gothic punk, rockabilly, visual-kei, Japanese biker fashion and alternative archives. Worn with black denim, leather trousers, combat boots or a stripped-back monochrome outfit, it lets the embroidery do the growling.
