More than a jacket, this blouson translates the Hermès silk-scarf language into three-dimensional garment architecture. Egyptian Revival iconography from the Carré 90 repertoire is quilted, paneled and padded into reversible outerwear of the late 1980s and 1990s, offered in rank A condition.
The Piece
During the late 1980s and 1990s Hermès explored a rare design territory: turning its Carré motifs, traditionally flat, ceremonial and archival, into wearable reversible outerwear. This blouson follows scarf logic rather than tailoring logic. Its surface behaves like a textile archive of tiled iconography, mirrored symbols, rhythmic borders and narrative density, while the deliberately restrained, utilitarian reverse expresses the house's dual identity of ornament and discretion. Such pieces were issued in small seasonal runs, largely for the Japanese and European markets, and were quietly discontinued once production complexity and cost outweighed scalability.
The primary face draws on Egyptian Revival imagery, a recurring Hermès fascination since the mid-20th century: pharaohs and guardian figures, ritual animals including lions, horses and falcons, architectural symmetry reminiscent of temple reliefs, and gold-on-black contrast evoking antiquity and power. This iconography was first designed for Carré 90 silk scarves, meant to be read like historical manuscripts. Quilting and paneling the silk fractures and reassembles the narrative, creating motion and depth a flat scarf cannot, so the garment feels closer to a portable exhibition wall than a fashion jacket.
The silk is high-density and tightly woven, typical of Hermès scarf production. Quilting is hand-guided machine work, so slight stitch variance is expected and authentic. Lightweight padding gives structure without bulk, and the construction is truly dual-faced rather than lined, which demands doubled seam discipline. Cotton knit rib at the collar and cuffs adds contrast and durability. Colorfastness, alignment and motif clarity remain well above typical luxury bombers decades on.
Reversible silk blousons occupy a forgotten corridor of Hermès history: too expensive to scale, too complex to repair and too unconventional for mainstream luxury clients. Production was reduced, and many examples were worn hard, damaged or discarded because of silk's fragility, so surviving wearable examples are disproportionately rare. The era overlaps with the house's conceptual transition, when more experimental silhouettes were allowed while the core identity was protected; it is neither runway nor souvenir, but something more private and intellectual. This is Hermès at its most quietly radical, letting its most sacred object, the silk scarf, become lived-in, reversible, padded and imperfect.
