The Concerto print behaves like a score: instruments repeat in cadence, spacing is deliberate and negative space reads as silence. Made in France in the late 1980s to 1990s, this reversible silk blouson in blue and navy is graded SA, near-unused, in size 52.
The Piece
This reversible blouson comes from the late-20th-century period when Hermès actively translated silk scarf design into functional outerwear rather than keeping it a purely accessory-driven art. The Concerto motif belongs to the house's long dialogue with music, orchestration and rhythm, themes that mirror its preoccupation with balance, repetition and disciplined variation. Unlike later mass-produced luxury bombers, it reflects an era when Hermès outerwear was engineered first and branded second, built to be worn, reversed and lived in without sacrificing graphic complexity.
The motif depicts classical string instruments in fluid silk linework, referencing the European orchestral tradition, the craft parallels between instrument making and leatherwork, and the idea of harmony through repetition rather than symmetry. The blue palette is deliberate: deep navy grounds the piece while lighter blues create movement akin to musical phrasing, so the jacket reads quietly at a distance and reveals its density up close. The motif avoids logos entirely, communicating through iconographic literacy rather than branding.
The outer face is high-grade silk with scarf-level print fidelity, the reverse a technical textile for everyday versatility, with lightweight polyester fill providing structure without bulk. French-made with precision stitching and balanced panel alignment, it shows atelier-level planning: reversible garments of this complexity are structurally difficult to execute, and the print alignment remains coherent across a functional jacket. The cut is an oversized MA-1 silhouette typical of Hermès blousons of the 1980s and 1990s.
Hermès reversible blousons of this period were made in limited quantities, priced high at release and bought by clients who generally wore them, so survival rates are low. Many were damaged in dry cleaning because of silk's sensitivity, others lost their tags or structural integrity over the decades, and larger sizes from 52 upward were produced in far smaller numbers. An example in SA condition sits firmly in collector-grade territory, a moment when fashion, music and craftsmanship converged without the need for overt branding.
