The Piece

The palette is controlled, navy, steel blue and ice blue, and in place of theatricality there are chains, hardware, feathered plumes and mechanical fittings. This is maritime luxury rather than imperial luxury. Hermès began as a harness maker working in leather, tack, bridle and metalwork, and the print sits inside that genealogy, its motif language suggesting abstracted equestrian hardware, marine chain systems, rigging elements and decorative tassel plumes.

The composition rewards close looking. Its asymmetry is deliberate: a diagonal zipper line cuts across the print, and the hardware motifs radiate outward almost like exploded technical diagrams, while the feathered plumes soften the metallic severity. Mechanics balanced with ornament evoke yachting culture, Riviera maritime aristocracy and Mediterranean restraint; where other houses build palaces in gold, Hermès builds yachts in navy steel.

The late 1980s to early 1990s often favored deep blue palettes, chain-and-hardware scarf conversions, controlled print density and asymmetric composition, and the jacket aligns with that era's maritime fascination, when yachting became the new aristocratic sport and the house translated rope, chain and nautical hardware into silk.

The fit is refined. A length of 54 cm gives a cropped women's silhouette, the 41.5 cm shoulder is structured but not oversized, and the 46.5 cm chest gives a tailored profile. Unlike a standard center-zip bomber, the diagonal zip breaks static symmetry, adds movement and visually elongates the torso on the body.
