A New Zealand-made M-422A by The Few, built on a faithful Edmund T. Church contract pattern and turned into a full custom Flying Tigers narrative. Hand-painted pin-up art, AVG insignia and a Burma–China 1941–1942 inscription sit on goat skin that has aged with honest depth, while the ribbing survives intact.
The Piece
A compelling example of The Few’s revered New Zealand-era craftsmanship, this M-422A presents a richly realized homage to the American Volunteer Group, widely known as the Flying Tigers. Executed on a faithful Edmund T. Church contract reproduction, the jacket is elevated through bespoke hand-painted imagery featuring period-inspired pin-up artwork, aviation motifs and insignia referencing the Burma–China campaign of 1941–1942. The Few’s runs were built with a precision that blurs the line between reproduction and resurrection, and this piece takes that base a step further, transforming a historically accurate M-422A into a full-bodied narrative canvas.
The back panel is where the jacket becomes legend: “Flying Tigers” typography bursting like a war-era propaganda poster, the AVG insignia fused with the American flag to anchor Allied identity, a tiger in mid-leap symbolizing aggression and air superiority, a fighter aircraft formation suggesting motion, and a pin-up girl on an aircraft nose, the psychological armor of Second World War pilots. The front chest echoes the story with a “Burma–China 1941–1942” inscription and an aircraft-mounted pin-up, tightly controlled. The customization is not random; it is a coherent thematic war collage.
The materials follow The Few’s New Zealand-era seriousness: dense, durable, historically accurate goat skin; a thick, plush, olive-toned natural mouton collar; a period-correct, warm-toned rayon lining; and an original-style TALON zipper that runs smoothly on intact tape. The leather shows natural aging and tonal variation, an earned patina rather than damage.
The original M-422A jackets were issued to U.S. Navy aviators. This piece merges that pattern with the mythology of the Flying Tigers, a group outside standard military structure: volunteer pilots flying for China before the United States entered the Second World War. Neither strictly regulation nor strictly fantasy, it occupies the rare collector space of historical reinterpretation carried out with authenticity discipline.
Its appeal rests on several points: production by The Few in its New Zealand era, an Edmund T. Church contract reproduction base of deep enthusiast interest, a full custom hand-painted program of one-off narrative character, and structural strength that matters more than cosmetic wear. Every crack in the paint belongs to the jacket’s story.
