A cowhide A-2 by THE FEW carrying a hand-painted Mama Payload back panel: a heavy bomber above a grid of blue bomb tallies, with a 15th Air Force patch and a Red Tails tone. Worn but vivid, it is a strong wearable example for collectors drawn to aviation storytelling and hand-rendered art.
The Piece
This A-2 by THE FEW MFG. CO. sits at the intersection of heritage construction and narrative customization. It is executed in cowhide, confirmed by the interior tag, and modeled on the WWII USAAF Type A-2 Drawing No. 30-1415 contract pattern, with the full back panel hand-painted.
The Mama Payload composition sets a heavy bomber in a B-17-style rendering at its center, suspended mid-flight, above a bomb tally grid of bright blue icons, the visual language of missions completed. The warm, almost affectionate name tempers the imagery, as if it belonged to someone waiting at home. The palette pairs the muted leather ground with bright blue bomb markers and warm yellow and teal lettering, playful at a distance and serious up close. The 15th Air Force insignia and a Red Tails / Tuskegee Airmen reference tone are stylistic rather than a strict historical replication.
The patch program comprises a 15th Air Force shoulder patch, a US flag shoulder patch and a cartoon bomb-bird chest patch. Even with the customization, the panel alignment remains tight, the leather tension intact and the silhouette authoritative. The cowhide has a slightly softer grain than horsehide, with good reflective depth and wear lines now developing; it is in mid-phase aging, not yet at its peak. The jacket suits aviation art collectors, Red Tails and bomber enthusiasts, wearers of vintage-style clothing and restoration-minded collectors.
