Santuario zushi portátil Edo-Meiji con Bishamonten (Vaiśravaṇa), deidad guardiana, talla de múltiples figuras, 22 cm

Made for personal practice and travel, this compact Edo to Meiji zushi shelters a finely carved multi-figure group centered on Bishamonten, the armored guardian of the Dharma. It speaks of a deeply personal bond between practitioner and deity, carrying protection and devotion beyond the temple walls.

The Piece

This Edo to Meiji period portable zushi houses a finely carved multi-figure Buddhist devotional sculpture. Designed for personal practice, the compact shrine allows private devotion while protecting the sacred figures within. Portable zushi were commonly used for travel or household worship, and the layered shrine architecture heightens ritual focus while preserving the figures from exposure.

The multi-figure arrangement suggests a guardian or protective grouping, potentially intended for personal safeguarding and travel. The central figure is identified as Bishamonten (Vaiśravaṇa), a widely revered guardian deity associated with protection, righteous authority and prosperity, and one of the Four Heavenly Kings (Shitennō) who defend the Buddhist law and protect devotees. Identification of the individual deities remains cautious without inscriptions, and is offered as informed iconographic context based on figure type and shrine presentation rather than absolute certification.

The format appealed to practitioners seeking protection, guidance and continuity of devotion outside the temple. Portable zushi are valued for their intimacy and rarity, and for the insight they give into everyday Buddhist practice.
