An Eastman Leather Clothing A-2 in heavyweight horsehide, fully painted to recall the bomber crews of the 8th Air Force. A B-17 Flying Fortress, a “Yankee Doodle” script and rows of mission tallies turn the back into a logbook, and the jacket remains near-unused with its patina still to come.
The Piece
A meticulously executed A-2 flight jacket in heavyweight horsehide, produced by Eastman Leather Clothing and enhanced with full painted decoration referencing 8th Air Force bomber operations. It is a modern archival reconstruction rather than a period original, a highly disciplined and historically grounded interpretation that sits within the upper echelon of modern A-2 reproductions.
The back carries the narrative. “Yankee Doodle” arcs across the top in bold red script above a B-17 Flying Fortress painted in operational profile, followed by rows of bomb tally markings, each inscribed with a mission target in the manner of period sortie documentation. Symbols on the lower panel reference enemy aircraft and wartime markings. The composition favors bomber-crew record-keeping over pin-up culture: cooler, more mechanical, with each bomb reading like a line in a logbook.
The front is balanced and structured: 91st Bomb Group / 322nd Squadron-style patches, hand-painted insignia on leather patch bases and a clean, symmetrical A-2 layout. A deliberate remove-and-reattach patch detail on the right chest echoes the way crews updated their jackets over time, a deep-cut realism drawn from authentic field modification.
The construction is what separates it from mid-tier reproductions: dense Eastman horsehide with a tight grain, minimal break-in, an original-style Crown pin zipper fitted from the outset and chrome hardware that lends an almost ceremonial edge. The leather has yet to live; its patina is still ahead of it.
The 8th Air Force and its bomber squadrons were central to the Allied strategic bombing campaign over Europe, and jackets like this echo the mission tallies painted after each sortie, the personalized aircraft nose art and the squadron identity woven into daily wear. Eastman's accuracy allows the piece to sit comfortably in serious collections, for the collector who values precision over spectacle.
