Few Japanese ghost tales are as haunting as the Botan Doro, in which love outlasts death and curdles into obsession. Japonisme Kyoto stitches the story across this black sukajan as a pair of skeleton lovers under flaming lanterns and red and pink peonies, an Edo-period kaidan reimagined as wearable narrative art.
The Piece
This sukajan depicts the classic Japanese kaidan Botan Doro, the Peony Lantern, a tragic ghost story of love, obsession and death. The embroidered scene shows skeletal lovers meeting beneath peony blossoms and lantern flames, symbols of fleeting beauty, longing and the boundary between life and death. The peony, often associated with wealth and romance, is rendered in burning reds and pinks, transforming prosperity into obsession.
Unlike military souvenir jackets, the piece draws on Edo-period storytelling and theatrical iconography, placing it as narrative artwear rather than Americana revival. Each jacket shows slight variation in its embroidery owing to hand-guided production, a mark of its artisan character.
Japonisme Kyoto is known for story-driven garments rooted in Japanese folklore, literature and kabuki aesthetics, and the Botan Toro Sukajan stands out as one of the label's most elaborate narrative pieces. It speaks to collectors of yokai, kaidan and traditional Japanese visual culture, to sukajan collectors seeking non-military themes, to artwear collectors and to those who seek out Japan-made garments, rather than to followers of Western souvenir-jacket history.
