Astro Boy, Osamu Tezuka's robot boy, stands at the origin of anime television. This ATS Japan statue, licensed by Tezuka Productions and bearing a 2001 mold mark, brings the character to a 40–50 cm display scale with hand-applied paintwork, large enough for real presence on a shelf or in a collector's room.
The Piece
Astro Boy is one of the most influential fictional characters in modern media. Created by manga pioneer Osamu Tezuka, he debuted in the early 1950s and later became the centerpiece of what is widely considered the first globally successful anime television series. He is more than a fictional robot: the character carries ethical questions about artificial intelligence, the humanity within machines and the relationship between technology and morality, themes that helped establish anime as a medium capable of addressing philosophical ideas.
ATS statues were produced under license from Tezuka Productions, typically for collectors, hobby retailers and display environments. Unlike small PVC figures, they were designed to give larger visual presence to collectors and shops. This example carries a TEZUKA PRODUCTIONS authenticity label and a 2001 ATS JAPAN mold mark, and its construction is likely an FRP and resin composite, with a durable surface, lightweight build and stable display form; the paintwork is usually hand applied.
Not museum scale, the statue nonetheless offers strong visual presence at a medium display size. It speaks to anime historians, to collectors of Tezuka's wider work, including Kimba the White Lion, Black Jack and Phoenix, and to collectors of character statues for anime rooms, galleries and retail displays.
