Hybrid Garments and Japanese Duality: Chitose Abe’s Sacai
A Sacai garment is two garments. A bomber jacket may grow the skirt of a trench coat; a cardigan may be joined to a shirt. Chitose Abe calls the method hybridisation, and in over twenty-five years it has become one of the best-known ideas in Tokyo fashion. This essay looks at where the idea came from, what it meant, and what to look for when collecting the label.
From Comme des Garçons to sacai
Chitose Abe was born in Gifu in 1965, née Sakai. She spent eight years at Comme des Garçons, ending on Junya Watanabe’s team. The house of Kawakubo trained a generation of designers to treat the garment as a proposition, and Abe’s answer was to ask what happens when two propositions share one body. She launched sacai in 1999 with five knitwear pieces. See Rei Kawakubo: Against Clothing.
Duality as a design principle
Japan has a long habit of holding opposites together: formal and casual, sacred and everyday, traditional and new. Abe’s hybrids are a modern version. A tailored coat and a sports jacket are not blended into something neutral; each remains visible, in its own fabric and its own proportion, and the seam where they meet becomes the design. The reading is ours, and she does not describe it so. But it explains why the clothes feel particularly at home in a city of layered traditions.
Nike and the sneaker
The first Nike collaboration dates from 2015. The LDWaffle, a shoe that fuses two Nike running silhouettes, was previewed on the spring/summer 2019 runway in June 2018 and released in May 2019. It is the clearest demonstration that a hybrid could be a product as well as a runway idea, and the most visible sign of how far the label had grown.
Collecting the label
- Early knitwear from the first seasons, since the label launched with five knitwear pieces, is the historical core.
- Signature hybrids, such as the bomber and trench combinations, are the pieces most associated with the house.
- Collaborations with Nike and others form their own category; keep the box and the tags.
- Condition. Hybrids often have more seams and more joined materials, so check each join for strain.
- Sizing. Japanese sizes run small; compare flat measurements, which are explained in the Designer Archives guide.
Why Japan
Sacai is a Tokyo label, and pieces from its Japanese customers often retain their care cards and tags.
