Old-school Yokosuka spirit with a hardcore edge. On heavy velour, a fierce tiger lunges forward wrapped around a demonic red-eyed skull amid flames and smoke strokes drawn from irezumi tattoo art, beneath flowing “Japan” script; the chest pairs a roaring tiger with a skull medallion and the kanji 龍虎, Ryūko, dragon and tiger.
The Piece
The back panel is the drama: a tiger lunges forward, wrapped around a demonic skull rendered with glowing red eyes and razor-sharp detailing, the surrounding flames and smoke-stroke motifs recalling tattoo-inspired irezumi. Above the design, “Japan” is embroidered in flowing script, anchoring the jacket in its origin. The embroidery is dense and multi-layered, and the velvet pile deepens it with dramatic shadows and a luxurious tactile presence.
The front is equally compelling. A roaring tiger on the left chest meets a sinister skull medallion on the right, accompanied by the embroidered kanji 龍虎 (Ryūko, dragon and tiger), the classic pairing that stands for cosmic balance, power and survival. The jacket joins the violent beauty of tattoo motifs to the softness of traditional velour sukajan construction.
The jacket comes from an unidentified Japanese domestic workshop, a common situation in vintage sukajan. Through the 1970s–1990s, small embroidery ateliers and family-run sewing studios in Yokosuka, Nagoya, Saitama and Osaka produced limited runs for PX shops, local boutiques and nightlife districts, many specializing in velour pieces made with embroidery masters who worked anonymously for export houses and souvenir shops. Such unbranded jackets often show richer velour and more dramatic artwork than mainstream labels, and each carries its own fingerprint of threadwork and illustration choices from the era before major brands standardized production.
