Black and Ivory Vintage-Revival Jacket with Tsuru-Kame, Pine, Butterflies and Floral Embroidery
Description
A beautifully balanced reversible sukajan combining two complementary expressions of Japanese symbolism.
The first side features a deep black satin body with softly contrasting ivory sleeves. Large butterflies in turquoise, pink, lavender and red move among pale chrysanthemum-like flowers, with further blossoms and butterflies extending along both sleeves.
The embroidery is arranged asymmetrically across the back, creating the light, floating movement of butterflies passing through a garden. Matching butterflies decorate the chest, while striped black-and-gray ribbing frames the collar, cuffs and waistband.
Turn the jacket inside out and the mood becomes quieter and more ceremonial.
The alternate side is diamond-quilted throughout, with a dark satin body and ivory sleeves. Its back presents the traditional tsuru-kame pairing of a crane and long-tailed turtle beneath pine branches. The crane opens its wings over the composition while the turtle moves below, both rendered in silver, dusty red, gold and green thread.
Mirrored crane-and-turtle scenes appear across the chest, making the reverse a complete design rather than a secondary lining.
One side feels airy and botanical. The other carries the dignity of an embroidered auspicious emblem.
Visual Presence
The butterfly side is distinguished by its cool, unusual palette. Turquoise wings, lilac flowers and burgundy outlines glow against the dark satin without becoming overly bright.
Its reverse offers a completely different surface. Diamond quilting creates a geometric foundation beneath the crane, turtle and pine, giving the jacket the character of a padded Japanese textile panel.
The two designs are connected by their emphasis on movement and longevity: butterflies drifting through flowers on one side, crane and turtle beneath evergreen pine on the other.

Iconography and Meaning
The butterfly, or chō, is associated with transformation, freedom and the delicate movement of life. Multiple butterflies can also suggest companionship and marital harmony.
The flowers appear consistent with stylized chrysanthemums, a motif connected with longevity, autumn beauty and refinement in Japanese decorative art.
The quilted side presents the classic pairing known as tsuru-kame:
The crane, or tsuru, represents longevity, fidelity and good fortune.
The turtle, or kame, is another ancient emblem of long life. The flowing growth behind the turtle recalls the legendary minogame, whose shell becomes covered with trailing aquatic plants after living for countless years.
Pine, or matsu, remains green through winter and symbolizes endurance, steadfastness and vitality.
Together, crane, turtle and pine form a concentrated wish for long life and enduring happiness.

Period Assessment
This jacket appears most consistent with a Japanese vintage-revival sukajan dating approximately to the 1980s or 1990s.
Its reversible construction, quilted alternate side, traditional auspicious imagery and compact vintage proportions recall mid-century souvenir jackets. The regular machine embroidery, synthetic satin and overall finishing indicate a later revival piece rather than a confirmed original postwar example.
Condition
Good vintage pre-owned condition with visible signs of age, previous wear and storage.
The embroidery remains colorful and strongly defined. The butterflies, flowers, crane, turtle and pine retain their decorative detail and remain visually impressive on both sides.
Visible characteristics include:
- Natural wrinkling and creasing throughout the satin
- Uneven sheen and light surface rubbing
- Scattered marks and age-related discoloration
- Minor thread irregularities and localized embroidery wear
- General wear to the rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband
- Light distortion and compression across the quilted panels
- Small pulls or loose fibers consistent with vintage use
- Patina to portions of the ivory satin
No major structural tear is apparent in the supplied photographs. Please inspect all images carefully, as the photographs form an essential part of the condition description.
Dimensions
Measurements were taken flat and are approximate.
Chest width, armpit to armpit: 60 cm / 23.6 in
Sleeve length from neck: 80 cm / 31.5 in
Underarm sleeve length: 55 cm / 21.7 in
Relaxed hem width: 59 cm / 23.2 in
The measurements suggest approximately a roomy Western L to XL, depending on body shape, layering and preferred bomber silhouette.
Please compare these measurements with a similar jacket that fits comfortably rather than relying solely on a general size conversion.
Display and Collecting Appeal
This piece offers an especially elegant alternative to the more aggressive dragon, tiger and eagle designs frequently seen on souvenir jackets.
It is well suited to collectors of:
- Vintage Japanese sukajan
- Butterfly embroidery
- Crane and turtle symbolism
- Tsuru-kame designs
- Japanese floral textiles
- Reversible souvenir jackets
- Quilted satin bombers
- Wagara fashion
- 1980s and 1990s Japanese clothing
- Wearable textile art
The butterfly side provides a graceful floral statement, while the quilted reverse carries one of Japan’s most enduring combinations of auspicious symbols.
Displayed open, the jacket reveals its full duality: a midnight butterfly garden on one face and an embroidered blessing for longevity on the other. 🦋🌿
