U.S. Navy G-1 Flight Jacket, Mike’s Sportswear Spec 55J14, “Lassie Come Home” Back Paint, Size 38

A mid-century U.S. Navy G-1 with its contract label and gold-tone TALON zipper, given a second life by a later hand-painted “Lassie Come Home” pin-up and aircraft on the back. Issue garment and personal artwork have aged together into a single narrative surface.

The Piece

A U.S. Navy G-1 flight jacket constructed in goatskin and attributed to the 55J14 specification lineage, retaining its original structural identity while bearing a later-applied hand-painted “Lassie Come Home” motif on the reverse. The composition, a pin-up figure with an aircraft, reflects the enduring language of aviation nose art reinterpreted beyond its original wartime context.

Fitted with a gold-tone TALON automatic-lock zipper (the bar TALON prized by collectors) and retaining its contract label from Mike’s Sportswear Inc., the jacket is a materially authentic mid-century garment that has lived a second life as a personalized cultural object. The painting was applied after the jacket’s service life, not at the factory, and has now aged into the leather, reading less as an addition than as part of its evolving surface: a record of someone responding to history.

The G-1 is functional, balanced and materially conservative by nature, which is precisely why it absorbs narrative so well; the goatskin records intervention rather than resisting it. The TALON zipper anchors the piece in an era when hardware carried identity and replacement was not assumed, while the soft, nostalgic slogan brings sentiment rather than aggression, placing the jacket within aviation folklore and postwar memory culture.

It is neither an untouched archive piece nor a reproduction, but a military object that continued to live beyond its issue life. It suits collectors who understand narrative layering and wearers who want authenticity without fragility, rather than strict archive purists.
