Capt. Don Gentile’s P-51B “Shangri-La” became one of the legends of the 4th Fighter Group, and this Toys McCoy A-2 honors it through unit heraldry rather than pin-up morale: a boxing eagle on a yellow field at the back, an Eagle Squadron patch and Gentile’s name at the chest. The dark seal horsehide shows only light storage creasing.
The Piece
A finely executed A-2 by Toys McCoy referencing the legendary “Shangri-La,” the aircraft associated with Capt. Don Gentile of the 4th Fighter Group, 336th Squadron, and the nose-art lineage of his P-51B. Gentile was one of the most celebrated American fighter aces, and his aircraft's name, drawn from fiction, became war legend. Unlike morale-driven pin-up jackets, this one leans into honor, unit identity and legacy.
The back panel is composed around a boxing eagle beneath “The Maddox Eagles” typography, rendered in a controlled palette against a warm yellow circular field, with “Shangri-La” script and a lower banner reading “4th Fighter Group 1942–1945.” The front retains a leather appliqué Eagle Squadron insignia and a name strip bearing “Capt. Don Gentile,” with Air Force insignia on the sleeve.
The shell is dark seal brown horsehide, almost blackened brown, with a tight grain and controlled sheen, lined in 100% cotton. Subtle wrinkling marks the start of patina, with no heavy breakdown: leather just beginning its aging story. Examples of this specification in such a preserved state occupy a narrow tier, bridging wearable garment and aviation artifact.
